Programmable DAQ Platforms

The new line of Programmable Platforms for physics application has been designed to help users in building a customized acquisition system fitting the technical specifications required by their applications and experimental conditions.

The different boards are designed with specific features matching the requirements of different applications. In particular, gamma and beta spectroscopy, HEP calorimetry, position-sensing neutron detections as well as custom ASICs readout are addressed.

All these platforms are equipped with an open FPGA, in order to provide maximum flexibility in the board usage. Moreover CAEN developed a powerful software tool for easy FPGA programming, SCI-CompilerSCI(entific) Compiler is Windows-based software designed to accelerate the firmware implementation for signal processing in scientific instrumentation and is targeted to generate custom applications for nuclear physics world. SCI-Compiler is an automatic code generator that, starting from a graphical block diagram, generates a VHDL peace of code that implements the required function. Blocks are designed as high-level components implementing complex functions like trigger logic, MCA, Oscilloscope, TDC, Peak Detector, etc. Moreover, SCI-Compiler is able to generate C libraries and drivers to be used in Windows, Linux and macOS for custom software implementation.

Developed in collaboration with 

CAEN is pushing on the development of fully programmable readout systems to widen its offer to those users who need a unique platform to manage particular applications. Thanks to the open FPGA, implementing custom processing algorithms, changing the board functions, reading out different detectors type … now is no more a problem!

We can offer hardware modules for a wide range of physics applications, all equipped with a preloaded firmware and a free and open-source readout software.

Moreover, CAEN developed a powerful software tool for easy FPGA programming, SCI-Compiler. This tool allows to minimize the firmware development time, replacing the classical VHDL code with its high-level block-diagram-based language. Just some blocks on your screen, few connection wires and … avoid FPGA labyrinth!

DT5550W

The DT5550W is a programmable DAQ platform based on Weeroc ASICs CITIROC or PETIROC for SiPM readout. The DT5550W can be used either as evaluation system for supported WeeROC ASICs, either as full featured Acquisition System supporting a wide range of SiPM detectors. Up to 128 channels can be read out. The full system is composed by two boards: a motherboard with an open FPGA, USB 3.0 connectivity and ADCs, and a replaceable piggyback board that hosts 1,2 or 4 Weeroc ASICs, detector connectors and high voltage power supply.

Depending on the chosen ASIC, the following applications can be addressed by this board:

  • ToF measurements

  • Cosmic Rays detection

  • Single photoelectrons detection

  • Imaging using SiPM

DT5550

The DT5550 is a Programmable 32-channel Digital Acquisition System for physics application. It is a general-purpose board which can be used in several applications where implementing a custom signal processing algorithm is needed. Moreover, thanks to the high number of digital lines, it is particularly suitable to readout custom ASICs.

Used in combination with the DT5550AFE accessory, single-ended signals can be directly connected to the board and read out like in a classical Digitizer, but with the flexibility of the open FPGA.

R5560

The R5560 is a 128-channel DAQ system with programmable data processing capabilities. It is an optimal solution for large experiments requiring fast digitization of analog signals, usage of several digital lines and implementation of custom firmware/software. The board is designed to easily support multi-board synchronization and interconnection, with the possibility to acquire 128 channels and scale up to hundreds thousands channels. Several readout modes (USB, Ethernet, Optical Link) are implemented to increase even more the flexibility and ease system integration in the experimental setup.

The board provides excellent results with the readout of position-sensitive 3He tubes in neutron detection experiments.

DT5560SE

The DT5560SE is a Desktop 32 Channels 14-bit 125MS/s Open FPGA Digitizer with Single-Ended inputs, designed to attain programmable data processing capabilities. The DT5560SE is designed as a solution for lab developmentprototyping and system testing. 

It is suitable for a wide variety of experimenst in prototyping phase, especially for the readout of Physics detectors (like PMTs, Segmented HPGe, Gas Tubes, ….) in small setups, where it is important to have a compact system and the possibility to easily change the pulse processing algorithm. The advanced Front-End allows to easily connect and manage most of the detectors commonly used in Physics Experiments.

R5560SE

The R5560SE is a 3U, 19″ rack-mount 128 Channels 14-bit 125MS/s Open FPGA Digitizer with Single-Ended inputs, designed to attain programmable data processing capabilities. The R5560SE is designed for the readout of large arrays of detectors (PMTs, segmented HPGe, 3He tubes, …) using a customizable platform and an advanced programmable front-end.

In fact, it is possible to take advantage of the powerful SoC mounted onboard to write a custom pulse processing algorithm on the open FPGA as well as build a middleware/software that fits the needs of the application of interest. Moreover, the advanced Front-End allows to easily connect and manage most of the detectors commonly used in Physics Experiments.
